OUR HISTORY

Drayton Mills Church of Christ, formally known as Sigsbee,  has a history of faith, fellowship, and family. For more than sixty years, Drayton Mills has stayed committed to the scriptures and the community of Spartanburg, SC.  Sigsbee began in the segregated South at the home of Matthew Miller and his family. Under the guidance of Bill Lindsay, these brave souls erased racial barriers in their desire to search the scriptures and understand God’s intentions for His Church.  Worshipping in a predominantly white neighborhood, these foundational members were threatened by the Ku Klux Klan, culminating in the burning of a cross outside the home of Matthew Miller.

Bill Lindsay, fearing for the wellbeing of the Miller family, persuaded Bro. John Rout, a black preacher from Asheville, NC to assume and continue the work within the Sigsbee community in 1958.  Though Bro. Rout continued his work in Asheville, God blessed his ministerial endeavors within the Upstate and by the end of the year, dozens of souls were led to Christ.  In 1960 Bro. Rout’s protégé, Donnell Miller Sr., was sent to Chesnee to strengthen a collection of saints there – this group would soon combine with the saints in Sigsbee and experience rapid growth.

By 1963 there was a pressing need for a church building, thus a building campaign ensued.  Through donations, pledges, and support from sister-churches, a parcel of land was bought on Parker Drive and construction commenced.  By 1967 the basement of the building was completed and remained as the worship location until the sanctuary was completed above in 1972.  By this time, Bro. Donnell Miller Sr. would become the official Minister of Sigsbee Church of Christ.  Bro. Miller, known for his “booming voice” led Sigsbee through a period of growth until his failing health in 1982.

Bro. Miller would be succeeded by Samuel Means who had the longest ministerial tenure in Sigsbee’s history.  During his ministry, the congregation outgrew the original building on Parker Drive inspiring Bro. Means to lead the effort in securing the adjacent properties.  Through God’s sovereignty, Fairview Church of Christ, and a building campaign, the Church was able to move into a newly constructed sanctuary.  Bro. Means, with the help of his Assistant Minister Pierre Gray, the church grew to 238 members and established Elders for the first time in its history. Sigsbee would continue to be led by these faithful men until Bro. Means’ health declined in 2016.

Battling a terminal illness, Bro. Means and the Eldership recruited Bro. Robert Davis who began his ministerial tenure in July 2016.  Soon after the arrival of Bro. Davis, Samuel L. Means would be called home to glory in January 2017.  Under the leadership and direction of Bro. Davis, Sigsbee successfully purchased a new 40,000 square foot facility and transitioned to the historic neighborhood of Drayton – becoming Drayton Mills Church of Christ.  As Drayton Mills, we will remain a blessed congregation
and our brightest days are ahead.  We invite you to become part of our history.
